School Budget Vote on TUESDAY, May 19
From the school district's web site:
Budget Vote: May 19, 2009 7:00am -9:00pm
Tarrytown Location: Washington Irving School
Sleepy Hollow Location: Morse School
Proposed Budget 2009 - 2010
The Board of Education adopted their proposed 2009-10 school budget on April 2. The budget represents a 3.89% increase in spending and will require an estimated increase in the property tax levy of 2.35%.
The spending plan reflects a reduction of about $2 million in expenditures below the level that would be necessary to support a typical operating budget for next year. Spending reductions were achieved by reducing discretionary spending categories, such as materials and supplies, contracted services, and textbooks, below this year’s level, eliminating 8.5 instructional and 10 non-instructional positions, and reconfiguring school bus runs.
The district was able to reduce the tax rate without having to pursue further staff reductions through a voluntary employee contribution commitment in excess of $150,000 for the 2009-10 school year. The goal of the administration's approach has been to employ a multi-year budget perspective designed to position the district for an eventual "soft landing" by reserving some options for reducing growth in future spending beyond the coming year while avoiding wholesale elimination of programs and services.
Go to the district's website at www.tufsd.org for a copy of the proposed budget.

What a weekend!
Dear Friends,
The Foundation Dinner Dance on Saturday night still seems surreal to me... It was really humbling to be honored for what I do by people who do SO MUCH themselves!
I am in awe of all the people who sold ads for the beautiful journal, who wrote the wonderful pieces for the journal, who got all the great items for the auctions, who set up the silent auction, who played the music, who designed and made the gorgeous center pieces, who ran the live auction, who bought the items, who processed folks as they left the event, and who still have more work to do now that the magical night is over ... all to support the Foundation that gives to all our kids.
I thank you all for the kudos. I commend AYSO, Wolfpack, and TNT for all they do. I am SO proud of my kids, I can't stand it, and I'm thrilled that my parents and in-laws could be there with me. They were so proud of all of us!
We often wonder if the Dinner Dance is really worth it. There's got to be an EASIER way to raise money, right? But we always come back to the fact that there is something about getting so many people together to share in our pride for what happens in our schools every day. We see the art work displayed, and we hear the music of the HS Jazz Band. We hear the speeches and know that our money is important and being put to good use. AND, we get to get dressed up and have a good time.
Here's to another successful Dinner Dance.
Thanks to all,
Katharine

There will be a Children’s portion of the day beginning at 11 am in the library’s Children’s Room on the lower level of the library. Come early for some milk & cookies and then find a good spot to listen to the captivating stories of Anik McGrory (Kidogo, Animals Sleep, & for older kids, Mighty Monty), Lloyd Moss (Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin!), Waithira Mbuthia (My Sister’s Wedding, A Story of Kenya), and Eric Velasquez (Grandma’s Records, The Rain Stomper).
The Teen (and Tween) portion of the event will take place in the library’s Teen Area, Connections, from 1:00-3:00. Jason Eaton will kick off this segment reading from his recently released book The Facttracker, followed by Staton Rabin, the author of Betsy and The Emperor (soon to be a movie starring Al Pacino as Napoleon Bonaparte) and The Curse of the Romanovs. 2008 National Book Award winner, Judy Blundell, will wrap up this portion of the event reading and answering questions from her captivating novel What I Saw And How I Lied.
The Adult line up for the day will take place from 12-4:30 in the Reading Room and upstairs event room and will include readings and discussions by Neal Rechtman (The 28th Amendment – a “future political thriller”), new media and popular culture author Douglas Rushkoff (Life, Inc.), and poetry by The Hunter Avenue Poets comprised of Barbara Fischer, Meredith Trede and JoAnn Clark.
The event will close with a musical performance featuring author Carol de Giere, accompanied by acclaimed vocalists Carole Demas (original Sandy in Grease on Broadway) and Lara Janine (Wicked), performing songs from Pippin, The Baker’s Wife and Wicked. The author and singers will be sharing stories about Broadway and the many interviews included in Defying Gravity: The Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz.
Out in front of the library, attendees will be able to purchase books and engage other local authors "under the tent" for a more informal exchange. The Village Bookstore from Pleasantville will be on location throughout the day selling the books of participating authors for signing.
